Guess I'm going home.

In my last post was titled "go bold or go home," I showed you a pretty bold paint choice for an old dresser.

As much as I can appreciate the photo above, I realize that a) the color I chose is very different b) my dresser is not nearly as lovely as this one & c) it just isn't very me. While I love the idea of going bold, I think I should focus on a bold move to Chicago rather than bold furniture choices. And if I do go bold, I would much rather have a fun faux bamboo chair or throw pillow. I could even consider a blanket. But a dresser? Too difficult to undo that boldness.

I spray painted the handles, which were a little gold for me.

When I think of what I envision for this space, I imagine the Something's Gotta Give house mixed with the house from The Holiday with a touch of color here & there. Something a bit younger with my own little twist. White sofa & jute rug in the living room. Blue/cream striped rug in the entry hall. Industrial bar stools. Very chic, clean, and lovely.

But this? Not so much. I chose the wrong blue & also realized that I don't like this dresser very much. I am so tempted to scrap the entire project, but want to give gray or even a gray/blue {the colors I initially wanted} a chance.

If it comes down to going bold or going home, you may just find me sitting at home with my pup, watching some good TV. You know how much I love TV.

I think this means I have to prime the dresser again. Do I have to sand it down, too?

  1. You said this was the first furniture you painted right? I think everyone's first furniture piece is ugly on the first go-around. Don't give up, just paint it another color (although I'd let it dry for a few more days if you can). It's a nice dresser and I predict you're going to love it when you find the right color for it.

  2. Try getting rid of those knobs/handles first before you go through a repaint job. They're too bold for the piece. I'd put on clear chrystal button knobs....it may give you an entirely different look.

  3. My issue with the knobs is that these have two holes for screws, so I'd have to fill the wood then re-screw another piece in (if that even makes sense. I have no idea how to do that but think it may be worth trying.

  4. I am no designer & I am zero goodness on the advice. But I refinished/repainted a dresser in blues & for the top coat, I did a "wash" of water/navy paint that created that washed look from your inspiration photo. Just dipped a rag in water, then in the paint, & then washed the dresser with it.

Or that could so be not what you're aiming for. Either way, I actually like the bold blue.

  5. I think the hardware is throwing off the look. I agree with the suggestion for crystal knobs!

  6. I totally agree with new knobs! They are too much. I hope you try again! Sometimes picking out the right paint color is hard. Good luck!

  7. I actually love the look of the dresser. I think the black drawer pulls give it a very elegant look and the blue will surely make this piece a focal point. However, if you absolutely can't live with the boldness of the piece then just prime it and start over. No need to resand.

  8. Please don't scrap the project! Remember it's only paint. You can repaint! If you're trying to match the dresser, then I would try a color like Behr's Twilight Chimes. It's a darker grayish blue. The dresser looks glossy, too, so you might want to get paint in a semi-gloss or even a high-gloss finish. Now, you could change the drawer pulls completely by filling in the original screw holes. Get wood filler and fill in the old holes, then buy new pulls similar to what is in the picture and drill new holes. If you don't want to do that, then I would suggest spraypainting the old pulls a metal finish, maybe a hammered or antique silver. You don't have to sand, again, just prime with a gray primer. Good luck!

  9. The original one looks like it has some kind of finish on top of it. Maybe you could just add something on top.

  10. Okay, I am not sure why I am alone in thise, but I like it. Why don't you try maybe distressing it? Put it in the apartment and then see....I think once you add maybe a rummer on top with some other accesories, you will grow to love it! I think it looks great. I don't care it I am alone. You said BOLD. That what it is...and it is lovely.

  11. I really, really like the blue but i would change the knobs to something silver and smooth. Or you could stencil on the blue a white or green or whatever color you like. You can also staple fabric on the drawer fronts or paint the drawers white or whatever,,,i love painting furniture it makes old things look hip and new.
